Washington’s ninth inning rally came up short as the Nationals lost their third straight game, 5-4 to the Chicago Cubs on a rare cool August evening Tuesday at Nationals Park.
With temperatures in the 60s, starter John Lannan (5-6) gave up two home runs to the bottom half of the Cubs’ lineup.
Meanwhile, Cubs starter Carlos Zambrano (5-6) pitched seven innings, striking out eight, and giving up just one run.
In the second inning, former Nat Alfonso Soriano hit a high three-run homer to left field, his 20th, off a Lannan breaking ball.

Pudge Rodriguez hit a walk-off single to right field to give the Nationals an improbable 6-5 come from behind win over the Mets Saturday. Stephen Strasburg only gave up two runs in five innings, but once again the Nationals failed to give him much support – until well after after he exited the game.
The game-winning hit off Mets closer Francisco Rodriguez set off a wild celebration after Ryan Zimmerman crossed home plate. Then the Nats set off fireworks in front of what was left of a sellout crowd of 39,214 one day before the 4th of July.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, Adam Dunn hit what appeared to be a home run to the right of the 402-foot sign in center field, but replays showed the ball hit the top of the fence and it was ruled a ground rule double, scoring two runs.

Ryan Zimmerman hit his 100th and 101st career home runs but the Padres beat the Nationals, 3-2 in 11 innings as the Nats fell below .500.
Pinch hitter Nick Hundley’s two-out, 11th inning single off Matt Capps to left field drove in Lance Zawadzki for the winning run in San Diego. Zawadzki had reached base on an infield single off Sean Burnett (0-3) that Adam Kennedy threw into the dugout, allowing Zawadzki to advance to second base.
