Ovechkin and Washington Capitals edge Crosby and Pittsburgh Penguins in shootout, 4-3

Washington defeated Pittsburgh 4-3 in a shootout in a marquee matchup of the two best players in the NHL and two of the best teams in the Eastern Conference.

In front of a raucous Verizon Center crowd, the Capitals overcame a 2-1 deficit, played the Penguins to a draw in a faced-paced overtime, and came back in the shootout to outlast their rivals.

Capitals overcome 3-0 deficit, beat Blackhawks 4-3 in OT after Ovechkin ejected

Nicklas Backstrom scored the game-winning goal in overtime, and Washington scored three goals in the third period as the Caps overcame a 3-0 deficit to defeat the Blackhawks in Chicago.

The Caps had to play most of the game without Alexander Ovechkin, who was ejected at 12:16 of the first period for a boarding major penalty and a game misconduct in the nationally televised contest.

Washington Capitals shut out New York Rangers 2-0, get 13th consecutive home win

The Washington Capitals shut out the New York Rangers 2-0 tonight at Verizon Center to get their team record 13th consecutive home win.

Caps goaltender Jose Theodore made 30 saves to get his 29th career shutout and remain undefeated in his last 14 games (12-0-2).

Washington Capitals trade for defensemen Jurcina, Corvo and forwards Belanger, Walker

The Washington Capitals bolstered their lineup by acquiring two forwards and two defensemen in four separate trades before yesterday’s trading deadline.

The Caps acquired defenseman Milan Jurcina from Columbus in exchange for a 2010 sixth-round conditional draft pick. Jurcina played parts of four seasons for the Caps before being traded to the Blue Jackets earlier this season. Jurcina is expected to have sports hernia surgery that will sideline him for four to six weeks.

Washington Capitals’ 14-game winning streak snapped by Montreal Canadiens, 6-5

The Washington Capitals’ team record 14-game winning streak was snapped by the Montreal Canadiens tonight 6-5 in overtime.

Brooks Laich had a hat trick and tied the game at 5 for Washington with just 19 seconds left in regulation when he redirected a shot by Mike Knuble.

But Montreal’s Tomas Plekanec, who scored two goals, fired the game-winner past Jose Theodore with 7.5 seconds left in overtime.

Ovechkin’s Super Sunday: Hat trick leads Washington Caps over Pittsburgh Penguins for 14th straight

A game featuring the two best players in the NHL and pitting the Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins against the red hot Washington Capitals lived up to its billing as the Caps beat the Pens 5-4 in overtime to extend their winning streak to 14.

Alexander Ovechkin’s hat trick outdid Sidney Crosby’s two goals as the Caps overcame a 4-1 deficit in a nationally televised game today at Verizon Center.

Mike Knuble capped the amazing comeback with the game-winner in overtime on a power play goal after Ovechkin’s shot clanged off the post.

Red hot Washington Capitals win 13th in a row, take on Pittsburgh Penguins tomorrow

The Washington Capitals will try to extend their franchise record winning streak to 14 games as they host the Pittsburgh Penguins tomorrow in their traditional Super Bowl Sunday contest.  The game features the NHL’s two best players, Alexander Ovechkin of the Caps and Sidney Crosby of the Penguins.

Red hot Washington Capitals win 13th in a row, 5-2 over Atlanta Thrashers

The red hot Washington Capitals won their 13th consecutive game tonight, 5-2 over the Atlanta Thrashers in Washington.

Caps backup goalie Michael Neuvirth made a career-high 43 saves as the Caps got goals from their three leading scorers: Alexander Ovechkin (39), Alexander Semin (26), and Nicklas Backstrom (25).

Ovechkin scored his league-leading 39th goal on a power play slapshot past goalie Ondrej Pavelec at the 13:41 mark of the first period. Backstrom fed Ovechkin the puck as Ovie was sprinting back from the bench after retrieving a new stick.

Washington Capitals win team record 12th straight over NY Rangers, Ovechkin gets 500th career point

The Washington Capitals extended their team record winning streak to 12 games with a 6-5 victory over the New York Rangers last night at Madison Square Garden.

Nicklas Backstrom scored five points including the game-winning goal early in the third period, while linemate Alexander Ovechkin scored two goals.

Ovechkin scored his 500th career point in style with 8.5 seconds left in the second period, sliding the puck through the legs of Michal Rozsival and up over goalie Henrik Lundqvist. The goal, Ovie’s 38th, closed the gap to 5-4.

Washington Capitals beat Boston Bruins for franchise record 11th win in a row

The Washington Capitals won a team-record 11th straight game last night over the Boston Bruins, 4-1.

Brooks Laich and Boyd Gordon each scored past Bruins goalie Tim Thomas in a three minute-stretch in the 3rd period to give the Caps a 3-1 advantage. Caps goalie Jose Theodore was superb in the net, stopping 41 shots.

The Caps have won 14 of 15 games since Alexander Ovechkin was named Captain January 5. Ovechkin was named the NHL’s first star of the month for January.
